Randy Detrick and Greg Ferguson, Directors
The Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Randy Detrick and Greg Ferguson, is the flagship ensemble of OYSA. Members perform wide variety of advanced-level and original works from the baroque period through the 21st century. The Symphony is open to advanced-level string, woodwind, brass and percussion, players usually between the ages of 14 and 18. Younger musicians who perform at an advanced level may also audition for this group but only with prior permission from the OYSA Music Director.

William R. Detrick – Symphony Orchestra (Founding Director)
Randy Detrick holds both a Bachelors and a Masters of Music Education degree from Kansas State University. He has spent thirty-three of the last thirty-seven years as a music educator with the Olathe Public Schools. Mr. Detrick is currently the Orchestra Program Facilitator for the Olathe Public Schools, is a founding director of the Olathe Youth Symphony Association, and is on the Board of Directors for the Olathe Arts Alliance. He holds memberships in the Music Educators National Conference, Kansas Music Educators Association, American String Teachers Association, and International Association of Jazz Educators. Mr. Detrick has served as a conductor and clinician throughout the Midwest.
Gregory Ferguson – Symphony Orchestra (Founding Director)
Greg Ferguson holds a Bachelors of Music Education from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music and a Master of Liberal Arts from Baker University School of Professional and Graduate Studies. He began his career with the Olathe Public Schools in 1985 and has been the Director of Orchestras at Olathe South High School since 1987. Under Mr. Ferguson’s direction the Olathe South High School Orchestra has received consistent first division ratings at State Music Festival for several years. The Orchestra has toured Southern California, Texas, Florida, Boston, Dallas, and most recently Chicago. Mr. Ferguson is a member of the Music Educators National Conference, the American String Teachers Association, and the Kansas Music Educators Association. He is also one of the founding directors of the Olathe Youth Symphony Association, which is celebrating their 25th season this year.
