PRELUDE STRINGS

Prelude Strings serves the needs of younger string players, who are currently members of their 6th grade orchestra. The goal of this group is to refine and build upon musical skills necessary to prepare members for entrance into the Philharmonic Orchestra. Students are introduced to a variety of orchestral techniques including following more subtle and refined cues from a conductor; playing without a conductor; understanding and executing more refined and varied bow-distribution, dynamics, tone colors; and expanding knowledge of a variety of key signatures. The typical grade level of the Prelude Strings is 6th grade but younger students with appropriate experience may apply.

The Prelude Strings meets only during the 2nd semester of the Olathe Youth Symphony Association’s concert season (January – April). A typical season for Prelude Strings includes approximately 10 rehearsals beginning the second Monday in January and concluding with a concert performance on the second Sunday in April. Rehearsals are scheduled on Monday evenings from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at Olathe South High School.

Auditions are not required for membership in the Prelude Strings ensemble, however, a teacher recommendation from the student’s orchestra director is required. During the months of November and December students will have the opportunity to sign-up. An application form will be available on our web-site by November 1st. Those qualifying for this group will be assessed a $80 participation fee payable prior to January 1st. Scholarships based on financial need are available.
